Once in a Lifetime Holiday... and No Sitter?
Planning the perfect holiday is exciting, but what happens when you can’t find someone you trust to look after your dog?
I was chatting with a friend recently, and we got talking about holidays. She mentioned how she would love to go on holiday with her family but it’s usually her family who look after her dogs when she was away. The seed was planted….
The more I thought about it, the more I realised how many people probably put finding a dog sitter at the very bottom of their holiday checklist. Flights, accommodation and travel insurance all get booked months in advance, but care for the dog is often left until much later. By then, the best sitters may already be fully booked.
Most of us only take on a limited number of dogs because we want to give each one the time, attention and routine they deserve. That means availability disappears surprisingly quickly, especially during school holidays and the summer months.
Finding someone to look after your dog shouldn’t be the last box you tick before you travel. It deserves just as much thought as choosing the hotel or booking the flights. After all, if you’re worrying about your dog while you’re away, it’s much harder to relax and enjoy the holiday you’ve worked so hard for.
That’s why I’d always encourage people to start looking for a dog sitter as soon as they begin planning their trip. It gives you time to meet someone, ask questions, arrange a trial visit if needed and, most importantly, make sure you’re completely happy before you travel.
Because every great holiday starts with peace of mind—and that includes knowing your dog is happy too.
I hope this checklist helps you find someone you trust. Whether you choose Wanderlust & Wags or another sitter, knowing your dog is in safe hands means you can relax and enjoy the holiday you’ve been looking forward to.
